I love a good old fashioned riff. The template couldn’t be simpler, and I find it’s a great way to explore flavor combinations. First, select an interesting spirit, and then try the cocktail using different bitters. This riff by Erick Castro (Bartender at Large) may seem a bit seasonal with the cinnamon, but I find it to be perfect for just about any occasion. Hat tip to the book I discovered the recipe in–The Old-Fashioned: The Story of the World’s First Classic Cocktail, with Recipes and Lore.
PS – If you’re looking to make clear ice spheres at home, I made this one using Wintersmiths’ mold. Don’t miss my full ice mold review here. I also realize I’m not “building” the cocktail in the glass, but hey–sometimes you do things slightly differently for the photo op.
Cheers!
