Grapefruit Martini for National Martini Day

grapefruit_martini_primary
The martini. A classic, and arguably the most iconic cocktail. It’s hard to admit that I don’t think I’ve ever ordered one at a reputable cocktail bar. For whatever reason I’ve just never gravitated towards them. Perhaps it is the thought of olive juice or an olive garnish that always deterred me.

Martinis in their simplest form are vodka or gin, dry vermouth, and garnished with a lemon peel or olive. For this recipe, I went with gin (Bombay Sapphire East) and added some freshly squeezed grapefruit juice. I included a small amount of Cointreau to provide some additional citrus notes and add sweetness to the bitterness of the grapefruit juice. The tricky part of this recipe is being able to taste the grapefruit without the drink being overly bitter.

Overall, this is a simple take on a classic. I think that the recipe could be altered a few ways to better achieve the grapefruit flavor. A grapefruit infused vodka could be used, or perhaps a rapid infusion could be done with an iSi whipper. As always, try it out and feel free to have fun with the process. Leave a comment and let me know how it goes!
