The old fashioned is not only a personal favorite, it’s a favorite among cocktail enthusiasts. I think this is largely due to its versatility and ability to showcase the base spirit – which doesn’t have to be whiskey.
However, this recipe is for a simple fig and walnut old fashioned does include whiskey. Using a fig-infused Elijah Craig (per Death & Co specs) and walnut bitters, the simple recipe gains an additional touch of complexity that’s good for a change of pace or for a seasonal play on the standard old fashioned. If I were to change this in the future, I’d be curious about trying a vanilla simple syrup instead of the demerara.

Ingredients
- 2 ounces fig-infused Elijah Craig simple recipe in notes
- 1 teaspoon demerara syrup
- 3 dashes Fee Brothers Walnut Bitters
- 1 dash Bitter Truth Orange Bitters
Instructions
- Build the drink in a rocks glass by pouring all ingredients over a large ice cube.
- Stir until chilled and garnish with a fig and an expressed orange peel.

Muddle 4 figs in a large jar and add one 750-ml bottle of Elijah Craig 12-year bourbon.
Close jar and shake occasionally over the course of 1 hour.
